Sustainability meets innovation

The future of sustainable building

Combating climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time. The building sector has a crucial role to play when it comes to reducing CO₂ emissions to any significant extent. And the energy consumption of buildings when they are operational is just one of many aspects. A far greater proportion of CO₂ emissions is caused during the manufacture of building materials and the construction and demolition of the buildings. This has been proved by UN statistics which show that the building sector causes 38% of global CO₂ emissions and 60% of global waste. Sustainable building therefore primarily means reducing emissions, using resources with awareness and reusing and recycling building materials.

As one of the industry’s leading companies in modern modular construction, we have resolved to be a pioneer in the area of saving resources in the building sector using sustainable modular building solutions and in developing and implementing new concepts and solutions for increased sustainability.

What is sustainable building?

Sustainable building means showing awareness in the handling and use of available resources, reducing energy consumption to a minimum and thus safeguarding the environment. In the following, projects are described that incorporate various special aspects of sustainability – whether this is in the form of mobile real estate, the award of certifications such as the BNB or DGNB Certificate or the use of Green Steel.

What makes ALHO’s modular buildings sustainable?

ALHO’s modular method of construction has far higher quality standards for sustainable, future-proof construction than conventional building methods. By choosing healthy, certified materials, prefabricating the modules as far as possible, continually optimising our processes and using modern, efficient energy concepts, we are able, firstly, to clearly reduce emissions such as CO2, noise and dust and, secondly, to make maximum use of all the resources used, such as materials, personnel and energy.

We offer turnkey module buildings of various types such as office, education, health care and residential properties. Integral planning using steel modular construction allows us to develop needs-based building concepts that combine attractive design with sustainability. Digital networking and high-quality workmanship prevent defects and delays from occurring. All specialist disciplines are incorporated at an early stage so that accurate decisions can be made.

Because of the high level of prefabrication at our factory, the building time for the modular buildings is around 70% shorter than with traditional building methods. ALHO steel modular construction is particularly good for adding extra storeys, expansions and extensions as it allows building sites to operate quietly and cleanly.

We have been using our tried and tested ALHO steel modular construction method for over 55 years, constantly further developing it so that meets our present needs and is viable for the future. Alongside the use of Green Steel, the new hybrid building method is an important step towards improving sustainability: it combines the proven advantages of steel modular construction with the ecological advantages of wood as a building material. Sustainability is not only important to us in the building process – as a family-owned firm, we also want to act sustainably when it comes to our staff, our region and future generations.
